  5. The Many Faces of a Performer: From the Stage to Music Videos

I recently saw Hollywood Records’ newest artist, Valora, at the Troubadour. I had hung out with their singer, Syd, before hearing their music and only knew her as a shy person. Generally quiet, but you could sense fame approaching. They’ve opened for some pretty big acts in the past, including the Jonas Brothers, but are still relatively unknown.

Another aspect of Syd’s talents that I was introduced to, was the fact that she’s been training as a performer for years. It was like night and day when I saw her on stage. Running around and singing her head off. Versus when she were sitting on my couch having a beer, just absorbing everything everyone else was saying. She clearly didn’t feel the need to be the center of attention in my living room. When she was on stage, she was pretty much it as the singer.

This whole thing about putting on a different face obviously translates to many different mediums, including starring in a music video. Of all the bands I’ve worked with to this point, there have been people who stand on both sides of the line. Some even stand on the line. As a director, there are certain band members I’ve had to push in the right direction to really get them to perform to the camera instead of turning around when the camera was on them. Others have continually made love to the camera, take after take.

It’s something interesting to think about next time you see your favorite band on stage or in a music video. How they may come off one way while performing, but they’re totally normal people when you talk to them in a everyday situation.

  8. Heaven Is Where Heads to Post

What a long yet rewarding day this shoot was. It meant a lot to see everyone all smiles at the end of the day. This was a shoot for Megan Flynn, our make-up artist, to shine, and did she ever. She turned our cast into haunting demons that would make anybody toss and turn at night. Our leading actress, Melanie Lyn Thompson, was a pleasure to work with. It won’t be long before everyone else figures out how talented she is. It was also a special day for Melanie, as it was the first time she worked on set with her mother, Doris Thompson. David Lockhart stole his scene with a performance that took all of us by surprise.

Special thanks to Allan Sporn. Your beautiful home is the backdrop that makes this footage shine. We also greatly appreciated the Italian catering. Rey Aquino Design made Heaven is Where look like the rock stars that they are for this video. Thank you for that!  Thanks to Kelly for bringing us yogurt. It was a much needed treat at the end of a long day or work.

I don’t want to be the one to call “poser” here, but it seems to me like the new Forever the Sickest Kids video for “What Do You Want From Me” is EERILY similar to “Don’t Sleep ‘Til the Music Stops” by The Fastest Kid Alive, which was copyrighted in 2009 (this can be viewed in the next post). Unfortunately, since FTSK is definitely the more known band, The Fastest Kid Alive might end up looking like the villains here. What do you think?
